Drawing is fun! If you don’t think so, you probably haven’t drawn lately. Or, if you have, you might be highly critical of your efforts. (Hint: This is NOT fun!)

Let’s put the “fun” back into drawing!

In these workshops you will complete dozens of quick drawings using a variety of media and non-threatening drawing exercises designed to be silly and serious, both. Some exercises will include one-liners, scribble drawings, cheater blinds, eyedropper play, doodling on steroids, Picasso dogs, drawing games and more… all to start getting your eyes and hand to work together, our goal. You will draw from life, from photos and from your imagination.

Are you afraid to draw or want to loosen up your drawing style? Are you are feeling a little niggling to add “line” to your mixed media work? Then join me tonight for a fun and rewarding drawing experience.

NOTE:
You can take one, two or all three classes…. They are designed to be taken individually and/or all together.

CREATURES ON WOOD
Saturday, September 11, 10am – 5pm
Cost: $145
Lunch is included
Each workshop participant receives a complimentary
copy of "Drawing Lab for Mixed Media Artists"

-----------------------------------------

In this class you will create a series of 3-5 paintings using a variety of media and techniques, including gesso, watercolor, charcoal, markers, acrylic ink, and pencil — a process that will bring exciting texture and depth to these whimsical paintings.

We’ll start the day with a short round of exploratory drawing exercises to loosen your hand and get the ideas flowing. Then we’ll get down to work!

Most art making involves a no thinking/no judgment portion and a reign-it-in/give-it-some-thought portion. These paintings are no different, and I will guide you through both of these stages. You will be surprised that many of your abstract starts will already suggest the animal it is going to be, you simply need to finish what's already there. You will also create paintings from your early morning sketches or other 2D or 3D references.

As your facilitator I will spend a lot of time working the room, helping each of you make decisions to create the best paintings possible, giving encouragement, suggestions and tips on how to fix perceived mistakes (there is almost no mistake that cannot be worked with). We always end the day with a mini art show, a perfect chance to learn from each other and delight in the days creations.

PRACTICING WHIMSY
Saturday, September 25, 10am – 5pm
Cost: $145
Lunch is included
Each workshop participant receives a complimentary
copy of "Drawing Lab for Mixed Media Artists"

-----------------------------------------

Odd. Silly. Fanciful. Fun! If you would like to develop these characteristics in your work, here’s your chance to learn to "let go" and develop your more whimsical side. We'll spend the morning completing dozens of drawings using a variety of media including pencil, charcoal, ink, and more. We’ll create from life, from photographs and from our imaginations.

We’ll also play several drawing games designed to get those ideas flowing and get you to start thinking outside of the box…

In the afternoon we’ll add watercolor to the mix., and you will spend the remainder of your time completing a small series of whimsical works.

The drawings and paintings you create today can be framed, pasted in journals, reworked later, turned into books, or "recycled" (or, most likely, all of the above). BUT, the best thing you'll bring home is a renewed, childlike confidence with pencil and paper.

YOUR INNER DR. SUESS
Saturday, October 9, 10am – 5pm
Cost: $145
Lunch is included
Each workshop participant receives a complimentary
copy of "Drawing Lab for Mixed Media Artists"

-----------------------------------------

How did Dr. Suess get his ideas? I’m not sure, but I can tell you how I get some of mine!

If you like the whimsical, the odd, the nonsensical and fun — and would like to begin incorporating these characteristics into your mixed media work — then this is the class for you!

We’ll spend the first hour or so doodling and playing drawing and word games designed to loosen your hand and get your ideas flowing… Then you’ll construct several irregular-shaped books (complete with windows and other surprises), and I’ll set you to work filling the pages with drawings, paintings, words, collage…. Each book will end up having it’s own “story” or theme… (Which comes first, the story or the art?)

You will begin adding imagery on one spread, with the goal of having each spread connect to and work with the images from other spreads, like a puzzle. (In other words, since the pages are bound irregularly, drawings from one spread will show up when you turn the page…. You will then create the next image based on what is already “started.”)

I will demo my own watercolor, collage, ink and charcoal techniques, but you are free to add any of your favorite media to create your very personal and interactive books.

One student recently said, “[Being in your class is] like being a child again, but you get to do it as an adult.” So join me, and unleash your inner Suess!

• A selection of your choice of mark-making materials (crayons, colored pencils, markers…) Less is more, and I will have tons to share, so please don’t buy anything new! We’ll be working on 140# hot press Fabriano paper.

Carla will provide:
• All drawing and watercolor papers
