A Year of  Mixed Media Drawing, Painting & Collage
Instructor: Jane Davies
20 Lessons
Begins January 8th

Hello!

I am Jane Davies, and I’m delighted to be offering my first yearlong class! This will be a year of learning, growing and having fun together as we make lots of art.

Each month we’ll focus on elements such as shape, line, pattern, texture, color, value, scale, and more, through a series of playful exercises and monthly projects. Paint, paper, and drawing materials are our main art supplies, but we’ll include a few other materials as well.

Just a few of the projects include:

  • Tissue paper collage to study value, scale, and transparency
  • A playful heart collage to study scale and contrast in pattern (and this is a key to why our pieces become too busy sometimes)
  • A project focusing on shapes in all their multiple permutations
  • Improvisational drawing to focus on the language of line
  • Timed exercises for practicing ease and flow, building confidence in your intuitive choices
  • And more!
  • Then, we’ll end the year with a folded book project in which you are free to use anything we’ve done in the previous lessons.

A big part of the year will be working in series. We’ll be making several pieces for each assignment which will give us the chance to experiment and explore the possibilities.

Be prepared to be challenged and have fun as you paint, draw, glue, cut, transfer, fold, stencil, spatter, stitch, and more, for this year of mixed — drawing, painting & collage!

Jane

Here’s what you get in 2026:

10 Recorded Lessons.
Each Month, starting in January,  Jane will upload videos for that month’s demonstration, project and assignments (with December and August off for vacation and catch-up! ). Each lesson consists of warm-up exercises and a main project.

11 Zoom Sessions
Once per month Jane will continue the theme with a 1.5-hour Zoom session two weeks after the video lessons (Thursdays at 10amPT)… your chance to meet others while working on another assignment and with sharing time at the end. (If you need to miss the live Zoom sessions, they will be recorded and available within a day.) In December, we’ll have a special Zoom party to share and reflect on the year!

Community Forum. We will have a private forum via CLUSTER to share our work and be inspired by the work of others. (If you don’t know Cluster, don’t worry! It’s simple to learn and is the platform Jane uses for all of her online classes.) Jane will check the forum regularly for uploaded work!

Forever Access to all of the above!

No art experience necessary… really! Just jump right in.

• We have kept the price the same since 2014 because we want this class to be accessible to everyone! That said, we understand hard times and don’t want you to miss out if finances are truly an issue. We have a limited number of scholarships available and you can apply  HERE.

• Thank you for being here and I hope you can join in!

For a full list of the supplies you will need, see the tab titled “Supplies” located just under the video screen above.

Supply List

Hello! Here is the basic supply list, but please always feel free to substitute with items you already have on hand! Jane has provided links for your convenience of specific brands she prefers. This is a general list for the entire year, so please don’t worry about gathering everything at once. Every month you will receive the following month’s supply list so that you have time to gather specific supplies for each lesson.

• Plenty of substrate paper – we’ll be working on smaller (6″x8″ – 8″X8″) and medium (10″x10″, 9″x12″,  11″x14″, in that range) sizes, so cut a few sizes of paper. I use 250gsm printmaking paper or Bristol… here are links if needed:

– Stonehenge Printmaking Paper: https://www.dickblick.com/items/legion-stonehenge-paper-22-x-30-white-90-lb/

– Bristol: https://www.dickblick.com/products/blick-studio-bristol-pads/

• Cheap Drawing Paper – I use 60# white sulphite drawing paper from Blick. https://www.dickblick.com/products/blick-white-sulphite-drawing-paper/ Copy paper, on the heavier side, is adequate, and any kind of sketch paper.

• Several sheets of card stock

• A sketchbook is handy

• Stencil brush or make-up sponge

• Brayer – soft rubber brayer, 2.5” – 3” https://www.dickblick.com/products/speedball-soft-rubber-brayers/?fromSearch=%2Fsearch%2F%3Fsearchword%3Dsoft%20rubber%20brayer

• Optional for making stamps: a sheet of peel and stick Fun Foam

• Newsprint (or you can use cheap drawing paper) – I use this for off-loading extra paint and for making collage paper.

• Acrylic paints – I recommend at least some professional quality acrylic paints, such as Golden Fluid Acrylics, supplemented by student grade paints.

• White Acrylic Paint – I always have my students get Blick Matte Acrylic.

• Acrylic matte medium

• Brushes – I use mostly flat brushes, ½” and ¾”. You will also need a few cheap hardware store “chip” brushes

• Drawing media: Caran d’Ache crayons (good pigment load) https://www.dickblick.com/products/caran-dache-neocolor-ii-artists-crayons/ , graphite and pencils, paint markers, colored pencils (optional), any other drawing tools you enjoy using.

• For May you’ll  need a pack of white tissue paper https://www.dickblick.com/items/blick-art-tissue-12-x-18-white-50-sheets/  and a 12″x16″ disposable palette https://www.dickblick.com/items/blick-palette-paper-pad-12-x-16-50-sheets/  OR sheets of freezer paper

• Palette (I use pad of paper style disposable palette, but use what you are comfortable with) https://www.dickblick.com/products/blick-studio-disposable-palette-pads/
