_____

Hello!

As many of you know, my work is usually very detailed and on a smaller scale, but I have found a way to work larger and with more freedom using India ink… and it has just swept me away! In this class we are going to create lots and lots of spontaneous drawings in a very playful fashion. The drawings will be created with unique tools (such as a tjanting tool for batiking!) that promote working in a sprit of exploration and experimentation. We will work repetitively, yet vary the size and angle of our subjects, creating an opportunity for surprising new marks to emerge. There are no mistakes. In fact, imperfections add character and complexity to the work.

The last couple of lessons are dedicated to transforming some of the experiments into final pieces by adding pattern and a little bit of color and other details for richness. Then, we will mount three of them onto wood panels and seal them with a beautiful protective wax coat, making these simple drawings look so amazing when finished!

There is such freedom and authenticity to this process. I really hope you will join me!

Class Itinerary

Lessons are pre-recorded and are available on the following time schedule:

Lesson “0” – Available upon signup

Lesson 1 – Tuesday, April 21
Lesson 2 – Wednesday, April 22
Lesson 3 – Friday, April 24

Lesson 4 – Tuesday, April 28
Lesson 5 – Thursday, April 30

_____

Lesson “0” – Get Started Right Away!
Start thinking about subjects you want to work with for this class. I like to draw inspiration from nature or old stone statues, but you can find it anywhere!

Lesson 1 – Tool Demonstration & Warm-up Drawings
You’ll practice working with a Tjanting Tool, Bamboo Pen and Sticks to make 5-10 loose, gestural series of drawings on large paper.

Lesson 2 – Ink Drawings on Cut Paper
Today you will cut your paper to three different sizes and make lots of drawings inspired from your warm-up exercises. You’ll try different compositions and repeat imagery from different angles and also varying the size. Accidental marks will guide the image in unexpected ways.

Lesson 3 – Working With a Second Color
Drawings from the previous lessons will be opportunities to practice adding in a second color. Then, create 10 new drawings on cut paper developing a dialog between India ink and your new color choice.

Lesson 4 – Composition & Adding Finishing Touches
The first part of this lesson is about taking a composition that has promise and drawing it again and again, making small adjustments each time. Then you’ll go through your drawings on cut paper and pick favorites in order to add finishing touches. For example, incorporating pattern and adding details like tone and texture that make them feel like finished pieces.

Lesson 5 – Mounting Drawings to Wood Panels
It’s time to mount your favorite drawings! I’m going to demonstrate little tricks I’ve learned to mount drawings to wood panels as well as how to add a protective wax coat to the finished pieces.
