Flowers & Patterns
Instructor: Luz (from Brave Art Academy)
Class Dates: May 19-28, 2026

_____
Hi. My name is Luz and I am from The Netherlands. I am a painter and art journaler, and making art has always been my most important way to celebrate life.
In this class you’ll create a beautifully balanced and vibrant mixed-media project with your favorite flower, surrounded by decorative and botanical inspired patterns. We will start by exploring our environment and taking inspiration from books, magazines, our wardrobe, gardens, parks…everything around you.
We will collect patterns for the backgrounds and then add flowers in a playful way. I’ll even show some games we will use to bring surprise and serendipity into our paintings.
Whether you are an experienced artist searching for a fresh approach or have no art experience at all, this course is suitable for you! The lessons are designed to help you open up to new techniques, getting confidence in your own process and (re)discover the joy of painting.
Are you in for some floral magic? Then join us!

Lesson 2 – Color Palettes & Background layers
In this lesson you’ll be preparing the background layer for your main project and you will paint the backgrounds of the collage papers you need for your patterns.
Lesson 3 – Flower Studies
For this part of the class you need at least one specimen of the flower you want to work with. You’ll be studying, sketching and painting this flower in a playful way, using two “games”: “The Flower Game” and “The Material Game.”
Lesson 4 – Design Your Patterns
This lesson is all about patterns! You see many examples that Luz creates and you’ll design your own stunning patterns.
Lesson 5 – The Flower Project: Patterns
Now you have your pattern designs, you’ll be integrating those as a layer of your main project.
Lesson 6 – The Flower Project: Painting Your Flower
In this lesson it’s time to draw and paint your flower or group of flowers. And at the end you’ll be working on the finishing touches to complete your masterpiece.

Supply List
Note: In all of our classes we encourage you to improvise with supplies you already have on hand! Links are just provided for your convenience.
Hello! These are the supplies you will need for the class. Please feel free to substitute with items you already have on hand!
• A Flower! First of all, you need a flower as a starting point for this course. Preferably a real flower. If you cannot pick or buy these, use your own photos in which you see the flower from various angles.
• Substrate for your main project. You can work on paper, a wooden panel, or your art journal! I will be demonstrating on Canson mixed-media paper (but any brand will work).
• Thin papers for patterns; I use tissue paper, tea bags, or packaging paper, for example from a shoe box. I often use paper that is slightly transparent.
• Acrylic paint
• A brayer
• A selection of markers. Posca acrylic markers or similar; Copic markers
• Matt gel medium
• a selection of paintbrushes
The Games
In order to play the two games in this course, you need two dice. You can print the dice in this workbook or use regular dice. I use an hourglass for the time, you can also use a stopwatch or your cell phone timer. You can choose the six different materials that you use for the materials game. I use pastels, gouache, copic markers, Karisma crayons, charcoal and acrylic paint. I have chosen to work on various types of paper, such as kraft paper, thick green paper, mixed media paper, sketch paper and sheet music from an old music book. The choice of paper depends on what material you are working with. So make sure you have everything ready before you start the game so you can stay in the flow! For the flower game you could simply use a pencil, graphite pencil or charcoal.
