Class Description

Hi!

This is our 9th yearlong class! Over the past eight years we’ve drawn and painted giraffes, illustrated fairy tales, looked for the “spark” with Lynn Whipple, worked from daily prompts, collaged with Lynn and Anne Marie Grgich, worked on a series in “Y is for Yellow” and, most recently, combined words and pictures!

This year’s class has three main parts.

The first will be a monthly Mixed-Media Lesson via recorded video from my studio. To me, mixed media is mostly about experimenting! And not just experimenting with materials (which we WILL do!), but also with concepts, styles and ways of expressing ourselves. The goal for each assignment is that it will be fun to do and also maybe give you some new tools and ideas to take into your next piece. We’ll work with watercolor, ink, colored pencils, markers, fabric, ribbons, thread, photography, acrylics, charcoal, pastels and etc. and etc.!

The second part will be a monthly Zoom Work Session where I will lead you through one or two warmup drawing exercises and then we will all spend an hour creating together in real time. Imagine sitting all together at a coffee shop, all doing our own thing together. It is surprisingly fun to work alongside each other even virtually!! (These will be recorded and accessible later if you need to miss.)

The third part of the class is about finding ways to stay motivated and inspired. We are constantly changing as people and as artists, and one of my biggest challenges is to keep myself feeling like I’m capable of making something NEW. This is where we need to reach outside of ourselves, so in this class I will be bringing Guest Artists to interview and maybe some studio visits when we can travel again. This is similar to what we did in our (feat.) class. We will also be talking about other sources of inspiration: books, the world around us and even our inner lives. I really want to create a master list of sources of inspiration based on what we can all bring to the table, a sort of “stone soup” of motivation!

I anticipate this to be a busy and ABUNDANT year of creating! I’m really looking forward to it, and hope you can join in!

Carla (and Steve)

Update! Guests so far this year: Della Wells, Henrik Drescher, Camilla Engman and Pam Garrison.
