Class Description

Pop Up Your Sketchbook!
Teacher: Lewis Rossignol
5 Lessons • $59
Class Dates: October 14-23, 2025

If you are like me you have fond memories of pop-up books from when you were a kid. There’s something fun about moving pieces within a book. This class will bring you back to that fun place because we will be creating moving parts—”CONTRAPTIONS”—in our sketchbooks. I’ll show you how to make three different types of movement that can be added to your sketchbook, and then we’ll figure out fun ways to incorporate them into our art.

Once you see how these different components work you’ll be able to use similar ideas to come up with your own unique interactive parts moving forward. This has led to some new, fresh ideas in my own work and has also made it fun to share my sketchbook with those around me!  I hope you can join me in turning our sketchbooks into interactive art pieces.

As a side note, this class may be a good one to do with your children too as they’ll certainly enjoy this process too. Of course we will be using cutting tools so they’ll need to be supervised during that part.

Class Itinerary

Lesson 1: Sliding Pull Contraption
In this lesson we’ll be creating a sliding opening with a pull in our sketchbooks. From there we’ll figure out creative ways to make a drawing that incorporates the moving piece we just made.

Lesson 2: Wheel Contraption, Part 1
For this Lesson we’ll be focusing on creating the technical structure for our second moving piece, a wheel. Since the wheel is on the backside of our paper, we’ll also make an opening for some fun reveals in the next lesson.

Lesson 3: Wheel Contraption, Part 2
This lesson is all about incorporating our wheel into a fun drawing. After we figure out how we’d like to use the wheel, we’ll draw on the wheel itself, and then fill in the rest of the page before seeing how it all comes together.

Lesson 4: Folding Door with Tabs Contraption, Part 1
Lesson 4 is all about creating a big two-part folding door with pull tabs. Like the wheel, this one is a little more complex so the structure will be our main focus.

Lesson 5: Folding Door with Tabs Contraption, Part 2
Since our contraption is all ready to go it’s time to have some real fun by creating a big sketchbook spread using our folding door reveal!

Supply List

• Mixed Media Sketchbook at least 8″x10″. Recommended one:  https://www.dickblick.com/items/stillman-birn-sketchbook-delta-series-softcover-10-x-8-portrait-25-sheets/

• One Large piece of card stock or heavy-duty firm paper (16″x20″ minimum). You want this paper to be pretty sturdy, as it will be used for the structural elements of your contraptions. (Here is a link to one Lewis recommends, but you can use whatever you might have on hand.)

• Metal Ruler or straight Edge

• Exacto Knife

• Scissors

• Painter’s Tape

• Glue Stick

• Cutting Matt

• Drawing and Painting Tools: You can use any mixed-media tools you like to draw with. No need to buy anything specific. But if you want to use something similar to what I’m using I recommend a variety of acrylic Posca pens in different sizes and colors, some water soluble crayons, and colored pencils.
