Welcome to the second class in a three-part series! In these classes we will learn how to create the Background, Middle Ground and Foreground. We will also learn many techniques for creating depth and making all three grounds work together.
In this second class we will use our paintings from Part 1 and create two middle grounds: trees and mountains. This class is about the challenge of creating elements in a painting that support, but won’t overpower, foreground elements to come.
Acrylics paints are beautiful. The medium is creamy, colorful, and very versatile. This class is designed to introduce beginners to this beautiful medium and to excite more advanced students with new information and techniques. I look forward to painting with you! — Fred

Part 1 – Middle Grounds Class Itinerary
Week 1 – Blue Sky, Mountains
Lesson 1 – Picking colors that indicate distance and depth, and roughing in shapes of a distant mountain range.
Lesson 2 – Adding a second layer of paint to the first layer for complete coverage. Adding detail to create a realistic look.

Week 2 – Sunrise Sunset, Trees
Lesson 3 – Painting tree forms, trunks and branches; working with subtleties color to create the right balance for a middle ground element in a backlit scene.
Lesson 4 – Revisit tree forms. Make adjustments in color transparency, adding additional branches and fine details with a small brush.

Part 1 – Backgrounds Class Itinerary
Lesson 1 – Mixing colors for the blue sky, building the big shapes, and defining our cloud edges.
Lesson 2 – Determining the color variations within the clouds, adding layers to create contrast and depth, and finishing by creating smooth transitions.
Lesson 3 – Create a warm color palette, lay down transition layers, and practice techniques for smooth blending.
Lesson 4 – Continue smoothing and refining, and glazing techniques for creating even more subtle tints.
Part 2 – Middle Grounds Class Itinerary
Lesson 1 – Picking colors that indicate distance and depth, and roughing in shapes of a distant mountain range.

Lesson 3 – Painting tree forms, .trunks and branches; working with subtleties color to create the right balance for a middle ground element in a backlit scene.

Part 3 – Foregrounds Class Itinerary
Lesson 1 – Decide on your foreground subject and make sketches to get familiar before committing to paint. Choosing warmer and richer colors to bring the subject forward and roughing in your subject with the first layer of paint.
Lesson 2 – Adding second layer of paint, refining the form of your subject, and adding final details to make it feel close and really bring it to life.
Lesson 3 – This is the culmination of our whole series, and we will be taking on the challenge of painting the human figure, starting again with some pencil sketches and then applying our first layer of paint to our panels.
Lesson 4 – Using smaller brushes, we will make those final touches that give the human form its character and personality, as well as refining light and shadow and bringing it to its finish.

Watercolor is such a beautiful medium. In this class we will work wet in wet. This class will encourage you to experiment, loosen up and let the watercolor do some of the work! We will be using lots of water and color, big brushes and big sheets of watercolor paper to create paintings that celebrate both looseness and control.
Each week we will learn new techniques and then apply them to our paintings. We will be exploring subjects that will challenge you in fun and different ways. At the end of the class you will have at least 3 large paintings.
Let’s have some fun experimenting with watercolor and better understanding its secrets. Give yourself permission to take risks, explore, make mistakes and make discoveries. I look forward to painting with you.

Class Itinerary:

Week 1
Lesson 1. In this first class we will experiment, explore and discover. Create a double wetting flood wash and use lots of color to better understand the nature of watercolor. Get your supplies ready, put some music on and let’s get started.
Lesson 2. Now we are ready to do our first painting. Let’s use the wet into wet techniques we learned in our art lab (Lesson 1) to describe the soft fur of a cat or the hair of a dog. As with the experiments, allow yourself to take risks amd trust your instincts.

Week 2
Lesson 3. We are going to start the 3rd lesson by experimenting in new ways. Techniques for this lesson will include concentric washes, salt techniques and isolated flood washes. Throw a pinch of salt over your shoulder for good luck and another pinch on your painting for wonderful effects.
Lesson 4. How does your garden grow? Flowers always bring joy to our lives. Let’s have fun using what we learned in our experiments to create a large bouquet of our own creation. Let the flowers in your arrangement be inspired by nature and by your imagination.

Week 3
Lesson 5. How can we utilize gravity to create beautiful watercolor paintings? Let’s go back into the art laboratory and learn how masking fluid, contrast and gravity can make a painting more dynamic. We are also going to explore the “figure” in silhouette.
Lesson 6. The city, in the rain, at night is a wonderful thing. Let’s paint it and while we are at it, let’s make it big! Get your big brushes out, put some of your favorite music on and give yourself permission to think big, take chances and have fun.

– Three 5 x 7 inch (or about this size) gessoed wood panels.
– Paint: Student or better grade (Titanium White, Mars Black, Cobalt Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Sap Green, Alizarin Crimson, Yellow Ochre)
– # 6 round acrylic brush
– “sponge” paint tool for varnish
– Paper towels
– A paper palette pad or paper plates work well .
– Acrylic varnish: Gloss or Satin recommended
