Hi Everyone!

“Chasing Rabbits” is an assignment I give while teaching (and to myself) that is about being free to discover what happens, rather than be intentional about the end product . . . a time to chase ideas, maybe not ever quite catch them but have a wonderful time in the process. And so for a long time now I have wanted to create a publication that had the FEELING of chasing rabbits.

In the beginning I thought it was going to be a really big book filled with every single piece of artwork I’ve made and every single thing I’ve ever written in my journals and blog posts and newsletters over the years!

Ha! That was never going to happen . . . . So instead I began to think of it as more of a serial book/magazine hybrid that includes drawings, paintings, sketches and scribbles as well as notes, musings and stories divided into three sections: Life, Creativity and the Pursuit of Happiness (with an emphasis on the word “pursuit” because, you know, life is hard). This is the first issue.

I really hope you like it!

Carla

Section 1: Life

The first section includes writing and images that tell the story of my childhood and adulthood (Incomplete! More to come!). It includes an annotated map of my childhood home, Greeting Cards to People from My Past, a selection of illustrated journal pages, and more.

Section 2: Creativity

I am tremendously lucky to be able to teach my passion: art and creativity. This section includes three mixed-media how-to projects and some other fun ways to think about our art.

Section  3: Pursuit of Happiness

I am a chronic documenter of my feelings, with hundreds of completed journals that I’ve kept on and off since high school.  In this section I’ve paired artworks with various journal excerpts, blog posts and other writings.

And don’t forget that this issue includes a “Girl, Grandma” Board-Book ‘Zine!

Forget Everything You Know & Draw Like a Child!
Teacher: Lewis Rossignol
6 Lessons • $72
Class Dates: March 25 – April 4, 2025

There’s something really cool about children’s art. It comes from such an intuitive place. For a child art is about having fun. The process takes precedence over the final product, whereas for adults it’s usually all about the final result.

The desire to succeed in creating something good often will cause us to overthink things and tighten up. Because of this I’ve been working hard to get back to that place I was at as a child where I was creating intuitively, focusing on the process, and just having fun. As a result my art has become even looser, my creativity has increased, and most importantly my days have become more fun!

This class should help you get back to creating art with child-like intuition, curiosity, and playful creativity. The lessons are based on different aspects of children’s art that make it so interesting to look at.

Class Itinerary

Lessons are prerecorded and are instantly available upon signup.

Lesson 1: Get a Grip!
For this lesson I’ll start by showing you some of the tools that I like to use. Although, for these lessons I really believe that you should work with whatever tools you already have. I’ll also demonstrate some different grips that will help you loosen up your mark making by giving you less control of your tools. The assignment will have you trying out these grips to see which ones work best for you personally.

Lesson 2: Process Over Everything in the Whole Wide World
This lesson may be the hardest one for some of you because it’s all about divorcing yourself from the final product. What the art looks like here isn’t nearly as important as the process. I’ll show you how I get into this headspace, and some ideas to create a drawing where process trumps product.

Lesson 3: Draw What You Know (Not What You See)
Children almost never use references. They don’t need to because they have vivid imaginations. Plus they don’t need to look at a photo of a butterfly because they’ve already seen one so they get the gist of it. For this lesson I’ll demonstrate how we can draw what we know instead of what we see. The assignment will ask you to draw a  picture completely from your mind.

Lesson 4: Popcorn Hierarchy
There’s quite a few different ways you can create hierarchy within your art, including color, contrast and size. However, for the most part children rely almost exclusively on size. And they do so in a non-realistic way. Have you ever seen a children’s drawing of their family where the mother is twice as big as everyone else? Does the child view the mother as a monster? No. It’s just that the mother is the most important figure in their life so they’re the biggest. For this lesson we’re going to draw a scene where what’s important to us is extremely obvious to the viewer because of the exaggerated size differences. Realistic dimensions are out the window for this one.

Lesson 5: Pickles & Problem Solving
My favorite part of children’s art is the lack of planning. They figure things out as they go, and you can sometimes see that in the finished piece. Because they’re working fast without much thinking they have to stay in a creative mindset where they’re ready to solve problems as they arise. The lesson here is about how we can solve problems that arise in our art. We may even create problems on purpose.

Lesson 6: Floating Elements for Fun & Profit
For this final lesson we’re going to think about the lack of grounding that takes place in a lot of children’s art. There may not be a horizon line, and things may seem to be floating, but we usually can still tell what’s going on. We’re going to have fun here with some floating elements, as well as trying to combine the other aspects we’ve talked about through the first five lessons without getting bogged down in overthinking.

______________________________________________

Hi everyone!

I would like to invite you to join me in 2025 for a year of creative art making and community!

I think a big part of our energy to make art comes from the inspiration and camaraderie from the people around us. And we are going to celebrate that with our live, yearlong community by sharing  and working together. A positive group based on support is really important right now and that is what “Carla’s 2025 Art Club” is all about!

By joining us this year you will receive:

Bi-Monthly Live Work Sessions. We will gather via Zoom twice a month to draw together, share ideas, show our work and spend time working together. The recordings of each session will be available in your class account by the Monday after each scheduled day. Once the video is up, you can access it on your own time schedule.

• Monthly Downloadable Art PDFs (Club Swag!). Drawing Worksheets! Art Prompts! Sidewalk Cracks! ‘Zines! Digital Art Prints! Printable Postcards! and… Who knows?! I’m planning on making a whole lot of stuff this year and you will get at least 24 digital, downloadable PDFs as part of your club membership.  Sample PDFs HERE!

Community Forums. We will have two dedicated forums to share our work and be inspired by the work of others (Facebook and Padlet). Upload your work, get ideas, and ask questions of our community. What are you working on this year? What new markers are people enjoying right now?  Who was that artist we talked about during Zoom last week? Etc.

I have a lot of drawings and paintings I’ve done over the years and in 2025 plan on selecting some and making downloadable art prints. Here’s “The Blue Bird of Happenstance,” an illustration created in Fall 2024 inspired by Aris Moore’s class. I plan on making a new print each month. Click the link, and print out on photo paper or other nice paper, then frame!

• Creativity Worksheets
https://images.carlasonheim.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/30105518/sparksummer7worksheets.pdf

I love making drawing and creativity worksheets for adults… I even created a book — The Art of Silliness — that was based on my first worksheets! In 2025 I hope to revisit this format and make more! Here is a set of six “Journal Diving” worksheets that I made as part of a 2015 class, Year of the Spark, which I co-taught with Lynn Whipple, and below is a 5-page drawing worksheet made for 2014: Year of the Fairy Tale!

I have a goal of making 20 of these little kinds of ‘zines before I stop making stuff (die)! I’ve only done three so far, so I have a bunch more to do. I plan to get more made this year and you will receive a digital PDF like this one of each of them!

Imaginary Characters – Sketchbook Exercise Video

Hello!

This is a really fun exercise (I think!) to do when you are stumped as to what to draw in your sketchbooks.

Gather about 10 drawing utensils (markers, colored pencils, etc.) and limit yourself to just those colors. Then, CLOSE YOUR EYES and draw four circles on your page, leaving enough room to later add bodies, etc. Now, open your eyes and began adding hair, eyes, noses, cheeks, and shading to your circles to create your character.

Now that you have a sense of who your character is, you’re ready to add the body. CLOSE YOUR EYES AGAIN, do your best, then have fun solving the puzzle of how to finish off your characters!

I have found over the years that I often prefer drawing done partially with my eyes closed, as the line quality and shapes can be imperfect and wonky, almost childlike… a style that really inspires me. I hope you like it, too!

After a summer break in August, our Guest Artist for September is Michelle Allen!

I first met Michelle Allen years ago when we both taught at Teesha and Tracy Moore’s Artfest Retreat. From her bio:

Michelle is the sole, creative talent behind Allen Designs. She has never found anything completely flawless in life and yet she finds beauty everywhere. She loves the imperfect, slightly eccentric, witty quality of the world she sees around her. It’s the unpredictability of even the most mundane things that she tries to recreate in her art. Often, if something seems too perfect, she will skew it towards the unrealistic to capture the essence of a whim. Although the pieces she designs are practical, her hope is that her art will never become so serious that she betrays the uniqueness that inspires her.

The Zoom Session will last 1.5 hours. Michelle and I will talk for a bit, and then Michelle will share a creative exercise. Then, we will work together in community where can continue your creative projects. At the end of the session, there will be time for sharing and questions!

Michelle will lead us through a “Simon Says” assignment… Bring the supplies below but remember this is a very loose list, whatever you have will work!

• Sketchbook or a couple sheets of paper
• Pencils
• Pens
• Acrylics/acryla gouache
• Different size brushes
• Rubbing alcohol

• Paper scraps (mix of patterned paper and someone or something to inhabit your house ie. images of people, animals etc), anything goes, whatever scraps of paper you have will surely work for this project!
• Glue stick
• Scissors
• Optional: gouache paint, gel pens, colour pencils
I’m really looking forward to talking and creating with Julie and hope you can join us!

Hi everyone!

I hope you will join us for a

FREE  Zoom Work Session

on Tuesday, April 16th at 11am-12:30pm PT!

Topic: FREE Zoom Session: Talk & Draw with Lendon Noe
Time: Tuesday, April 16th at 11am-12:30pm PT
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81054485974

Our Guest Artist for April is Lendon Noe! Lendon is a native of Jackson, Tennessee, where she has been a Professor of Art at Lambuth University, Head of the School of Arts and Communications, and Chair of the Visual Art Department. She taught primarily, drawing, painting and design, and has taught three wonderful classes with us!

Lendon and I will talk for a bit, and then we will draw and create together in community. At the end of the session, there will be time for sharing and questions! Lendon will lead us in a pattern making exercise—circles in rows of varying sizes and playing with the positive/negative space:

Supplies to Have Ready:

• a piece of paper that is any color but white or black (if you don’t have any on hand, you can tone a piece of white paper with watercolor or acrylics)
• a black marker, medium or fine point
• a white gel pen or white colored pencil

(And if you don’t have these exactly supplies, don’t worry! Bring what you have and just play along!)

A Word About Facebook

Hi Everyone!

Over the past 6 years we have hosted our forums Facebook for two main reasons: it has provided a space for a community of artists to learn, collaborate, grow and enjoy each other, and it has been accessible to everyone around the world and is easy to use.

However, we also recognize that Facebook is more than just an objective platform and is controlled by people who have abused their power through breaches of privacy and even ethical standards.

This puts us in a difficult position because, while we do not support the leaders of Facebook, we would never want to exclude the users that rely on this platform as a method to connect and communicate. For that reason, are working on creating our own custom community app that provides security and is easy to use for everyone.

We hope to have this ready to go early in 2021. Please be patient with us as we make this change.

Art Prompts PDF: A Creative Care Package! (Free)

https://images.carlasonheim.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/30103916/CSP_ArtPrompts-2.pdf

Hi everyone!

Steve and I recently sent an email out to our teachers asking for ideas to get through these next strange months. We loved Kara Kramer’s idea of a downloadable PDF of teacher’s art prompts, so we did it!

Here is a 40-page “Creative Care Package” from 12 of us! Each teacher created 2-5 pages.

CSP_ArtPrompts

You can print it out (many pages are meant to be drawn on), or just keep it online and do the prompts in your sketchbooks.

Please feel free to share widely… use in your classrooms… and share your pages on the Carla Sonheim Presents Facebook Group!

Thank you!

Please take good care,!

xoxo
